    Vissen in Zweden (in english)

    Hello,

I do have some questions about dutch anglers and their oppinion about fishing in Sweden. I work for a LEADER-area (the european rural development fund) and my aim is to make it more available for anglers. So I did join this forum to hear what european anglers demand from their vacation abroad, and what the thoughts are about fishing in Sweden. And I am also pleased to answer any questions you have about the angling possibilities in, at least, the southern part of the country.

So what are your thoughts about sportfishing in Sweden? Is it a possible destination for a fishingvacation, or is it just Abba and elks?

I am to take your oppinions and tell the hosts in my area what the "demands" are from an european perspective, and hopefully make them more available and adapted to welcome anglers from Europe.

Rock out with your rod out

What I think of Sweden? First of all it's the beautiful and stunning nature what could bring me to Sweden. I'm not a predator angler, but for us Sweden is after Ireland well known for it's pike. I don't know if Sweden is the place to be for fly anglers to catch trout or salmon. As a course-fisher and specimenhunter I've heard also stories of big tench, but Denmark is great too and not as far. For sea angelers Norway is more interesting.

So I would concentrate on pike and fly anglers in combination with camping is the wilderness far away from civilization or staying in idyllic villages and so on. Back to nature kind of fishing, a little bit like Canada.

Hi there and thanks for your reply!

Interesting thoughts! As you said, the pike is our most valuable resource. Would it be more interesting to catch a lot of fish or is it mainly the big ones that are attractive? For my part, if i would go to Ireland, it would be for the big ones. But then on the otherhand, we have a LOT of pike in our waters and perhaps am I a bit spoiled?

So it´s the "Astrid Lindgren" kind of villages that would sell? Even for predatoranglers? I like the back to nature bit better as long as we keep them banjos far away... Denmark do have the beer though.

"Back to nature" is good, and compared to Denmark that is what we can compete with. Nice fresh water with a lot of fish and no one to disturb you. An own lake for a week, would that be something worth travelling to Sweden for?

The coarsefishing in Sweden is good, but it's also not marketed. What kind of size are we talking about, ofcourse specimens, but I am not familiar with the sizes that you have in Holland. How much do , for example, a big tench weigh in Holland?

      keep 'em questions coming!

We like quantity as wel as quality pike. In Holland we catch 1 meter+ pikes pretty often, but I haven seen fishing videos in Sweden with for example Matt Hayes catching more then 30 pikes on 1 day pretty easily, with several 90's. I believe he stayed close to the Eastsea where pike eat a lot of herring, so they are fat. 1 meter+ pikes are bonus fishes, so if you are able to catch 1-3 in a one week for us that's great. I like to catch a lot of pike all day long rather then a few big ones. Most Dutch predator anglers have caught 1m+ pikes, but not much caught really big quantities, so that's interesting for use.

We like unspoiled nature with a great view over the lake, forests, mountains etc. Back to nature doesn't nessisarily mean staying in a tent. After a hard day of fishing a comfortable cottage with a nice barbeque on the banks of a lake is nice.

We consider a tench bigger then 55 cm and 6 pounds as a specimen fish, but we don't have a lot of tench-specialists, so I don't know if this fish is interesting enough, unless there's a big chance catching specimens.

It's nice to catch a lot of fish, but there are other things (nature etc) that could make a trip to Sweden super.

Yepp, mr Hayes fished in Västervik, and they really had a good fishing going there. The problem was that they didn't have enough rules. First now, when they have started to see the effects from this, they have launched a campaign (called "More and bigger"). From now on you are only allowed to keep 3pikes a day (why keep any pike, and if you have to, why not settle with one) and you are not allowed to keep a fish under 40cm or over 75cm. Let's just hope that the rules didn't come to late.
The pike have problems with the reproduction in the baltic sea, a combination of no rules, industrial fishing and pollutions. The Swedish board of fisheries are working with the problem in association with the Swedish angling association (Sportfiskarna) and hopefully they will succeed.

You really do have a nice chance to catch a lot of pikes in Sweden in almost any lake. That and the combination with unspoiled nature is what we have to be proud of. And it's really good that you mention this, since this is what I'm trying to "preach" for the campmanagers and entrepreneurs in my area. And it seems like they understand (mention big money and they sure will listen).
We have a tradition in Sweden to weigh the fish, and therefor the people responsible for the fishing often don't care about the length. And that will have to change, especially if they are to market themself abroad.
it's easier for them to get pictures of 1m+ pikes than 10kg+ pikes...

Coarsefishing, the question is: Would anyone pay to go to Sweden to fish for bream, tench, roach etc? I would say that even if the fishing is good, can we compete with the rest of the EU?
With pike I know we can. And to ask even more questions, what would you be willing to pay for a week in Sweden with good fishing and a comfy place to live? (I get this questions ALL the time when I meet the entrepreneurs, and my answer is : More than you think...)
